 Today we... learned about the reading power of making inferences, exchanged our books at the library, visited Ms. Thumm's class who read their colour poems to us, examined numbers and ordered them from least to greatest, discussed hazardous materials and the meaning of the symbols found on household hazardous materials, and we practiced our songs for the winter concert. UPDATES & REMINDERS:  Students were asked to look around their home (with parent permission) for household products that have hazardous warnings on them, such as explosive, corrosive, flammable, and toxic.  Are there any rooms that are 'hotspots' meaning many hazardous materials are found there?  Which room in the house it a 'hotspot'?  (This is part of our science unit 'Waste in our World'.  We will next discuss safe, proper ways of disposing of these materials so they don't end up in a landfill.)
 Today we... made a creation about something we adore and shared it with the class, worked on our rough draft of our colour poems, read from A Whale of the Wild, played Skittle Soccer in gym, practiced the math game Pickle, ordered large digits from least to greatest, worked on our social studies activity related to symbols of Calgary and Alberta, and we discussed our observations of our science experiment on water pollution. UPDATES & REMINDERS:  Please remember to bring in an ADULT sized white sock for an art project, and remember mitts or gloves for outdoor gym with Mr. Parsons tomorrow. Also, the grade 5s are collecting donations for the Mustard Seed.  Items requested include...  Today we... practiced reading in our reading groups, began brainstorming nouns and adjectives for our colour poems, read from A Whale of the Wild, completed the November section of our phenology wheels, worked on representing numbers in standard, expanded, and written form, worked on our replica of a symbol for Calgary or Alberta, and practiced our songs for the winter concert in music.  Today we... read and identified some similies and metaphors, learned about the reading power of visualizing, read from A Whale of the Wild, played a match up game to identify standard numbers, expanded form numbers, and written form numbers, painted a self-portrait, and signed out new books from the library. UPDATES & REMINDERS:  I am looking forward to meeting with everyone at conferences Thursday evening and Friday during the day.
 Today we... made a clay creation to represent an event we did on the weekend, wrote a 'quick write' story based on a writing prompt, had music to practice our songs for the winter concert, played a place value game of war, attempted a math challenge called Pascal's Triangle, learned about water pollution and did an experiment to represent what happens when water is polluted, and we had another music class to practice our songs for the concert again. Reminders & Updates:  Parent/teacher conferences are this week (Thursday evening and Friday during the day).  No school Friday due to conferences.
 Today we... read with our reading groups and did an activity called 'Word of the Day', we researched information about the story'Ivan: the true story of the shopping mall gorilla', played a match-up match game using numbers in standard and expanded form, finished our upcycling creations, and created a blueprint of the symbol we want to research for a social studies assignment. UPDATES & REMINDERS:  Parent teacher conferences are next week.  I look forward to meeting with all of you to discuss your child's progress.
 Today we... did a literacy activity called 'Word Ladders', learned about the reading power 'Questioning', came up with deep thinking questions related to the story 'Ivan: the true story of the shopping mall gorilla', played a place value math game, learned about representing numbers in expanded form, discussed what Metis week is and researched information about symbols of Calgary, Alberta, and Metis culture.   UPDATES & REMINDERS:  Next week is parent/teacher conferences (Thursday evening and Friday during the day).  We had a lock down practice today in the afternoon.  The students did a good job remaining calm and quiet.  Well done! 
 Today we... discussed the importance of Indigenous Veterans Day, worked on finishing up jobs from throughout the week, attended the Remembrance Day assembly put on by the grade 5s, designed an Indigenous Veterans Day momument and discussed what is symbolizes, researched symbols of Calgary and Alberta, and we had music with Ms. Bohan.  Today we... read with our reading groups, finished writing about our connections to the book 'Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion', exchanged books at the library, played a math game about place value and representing numbers, and began a sewing project related to up-cycling. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Tomorrow is the last day for students before fall break.  Please remember to bring poppy donations tomorrow.  Food donations will also be accepted for the Veteran's food drive.
 Today we... wrote about the importance of wearing a poopy, read a story called 'Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a Lion' and made connections, played Place Value Yahtzee and practiced representing numbers using base-10 blocks, learned information about the history of Remembrance Day and we did a brainstorming activity about colours in nature. UPDATES & REMINDERS - Fall Break is from 9 - 14.  School resumes on Wednesday, November 15th. Please remember to bring in non-perishable food items for the Veteran's food bank.  Also, we are collecting donations for the poppy fund.
  Today we... read books online at EpicBooks and retold important information to a partner, worked on catch-up jobs from the week, played a game with our kindergarten buddies, and discussed the reason we wear a poppy during our class meeting. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Fall break is from November 9 - 14.  Our Remembrance Day assembly is next Wednesday, November 8th at 10:30am.  Please bring in food donations for the Veteran's Food Bank.  
 Today we... practiced listening to and counting syllables, learned about reading powers and making connections, read from 'A Whale of the Wild', practiced identifying prime and composite numbers, created art related to Remembrance Day and the poem 'In Flander's Fields, and watched a video about the story of the poppy. REMINDERS & UPDATES:  Please remember to bring in food donations for the Veteran's Food Drive.  
  Today we... read in our reading groups, heard the story 'Finding Winnie' and discussed the characters, setting, problem, and solution, learned about prime and composite numbers, continued researched information about Alberta's regions, and saw a video about what happens to our recycling. UPDATES & REMINDERS - Fall Break is coming up... no school on November 9 (PD Day) and fall break starts November 9 until the 14.  School resumes on November 15.
