Today we... read in our reading groups, worked on our concrete/shape poems, used a Venn diagram the record similarities and differences between 2 poems, started our new novel 'A Wolf called Wander', finished and took up the answers to word problems in math, looked at a bar graph and discussed information we could tell from it, began reading short fairy tales (with a twist) on Epic Books that we will later create a shadow puppet performance about, and watched an assembly by grade 3 classes about burrowing owls. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Valentine's day is coming up soon. If your child chooses to send Valentine cards, please ensure you bring one for each student in the class. There are 22 students in our class. Also, no food items please (due to allergies and food intolerances).

Today we... brainstormed words that use vowel digraphs that make the 'i' sound, worked on our concrete (shape) poems, voted on a new read aloud, played Euclid's game in math, solved word problems that require addition and subtraction of large numbers, worked on our social studies Alberta regions assignment, and exchanged our books at the library. Today we... discussed what we would do if we had $100, continued working on our shape (concrete) poems, rated 'A Whale of the Wild', played multiplication BINGO, learned how to divide numbers by 10, 100, and 1000, did an experiement related to shadows and why they are different sizes depending on the time of day, and we had music with Ms. Bohan. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Report cards are available online tomorrow. The social studies Alberta regions assignment is due on Thursday, February 1st. Instructions for the assignment can be found in our Google Classroom.

Today we... played a game identifying vowel diagraphs and correctly spelling the words, discussed what we know about poetry and began writing a style of poem called a 'Shape Poem', finished reading A Whale of the Wild, went for a walk to the pond to do our phenology wheel, played a game in math to practice multiplying numbers by 10, 100, and 1000, and we worked on our social studies Alberta regions project. Today we... practiced using 'Talk Moves' while discussing what the best snack type is: salty, sweet or spicy, worked on our opinion writing paragraphs, read from A Whale of the Wild, played a math game called A-Mazing Functions, practiced adding and subtracting large digits, and we watched a performance in the gym. Today we... played a game of Kahoot to test our knowledge of Canada, worked on finishing up our work from the week, read from A Whale of the Wild, played an estimation game that is posted on Google Classroom, and had a class meeting. Today we... read in our reading groups, worked on our opinion writing paragraphs, read from A Whale of the Wild, solved some math questions involving using addition to balance equations (Math Pickle - Ballast), worked on our social studies Alberta regions assignment, and did an experiement about convex and concave lenses. Today we... did a literacy activity about vowel diagrams (2 vowels together that make the long 'a' sound, such as ai, ea, and ei), worked on writing an opinion paragraph, read from A Whale of the Wild, worked on a math challenge using numbers 1-9 to make 100, learned the science vocabulary words transparent, translucent, and opaque and created a sculpture using tin foil, and had music with Ms.Bohan. Today we... played Boggle, read the story 'Hey, Little Ant' and wrote our opinion about whether the boy should or should not squish the ant, read from 'A Whale of the Wild', played a math gamed called 'Race to the Top and Back', completed a math challenge related to a group of people who broke the world record for making the largest fruit salad, worked on researching the regions of Alberta, and read a story called 'The Snurtch' and created our own version of our snurtch. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Monday, January 15 is a PD Day (no school for students).

Today we... did a literacy activity where we used prefixes and suffixes to create new words using a base/root word, worked on an opinion writing paragraph, exchanged our library books, played an addition math game, practiced subtraction with borrowing, gathered more research about a region of Alberta and discussed possible options for presenting our information, and we did an experiment proving that light can be refracted. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Tomorrow is fun lunch! Next Monday, January 15th is a PD Day (no school).

Happy new year and welcome back!! Today we... created a word splash about our winter break, listened to a story called 'A Fine, Fine School' and wrote pros and cons about Mr. Keen's idea of going to school EVERYDAY, played addition war, practiced adding large numbers with regrouping, worked on gathering research about the regions of Alberta, and had music with Ms. Bohan. UPDATES & REMINDERS: Wednesday is fun lunch. The CBE policy regarding outdoor recess and weather is that students go out if it is -20 or warmer. Please make sure your child has the appropriate clothing to go outside in this type of weather. If it is below -20, students will stay indoors for their recess break!
